Ground lunch is a relatively young sport. Although many people call starting from the slope “the invention of the bicycle”, we know for sure that this is not an invention, but the evolution of two sports – paragliding and parachuting. The essence of the sport – slide on the wing along the slope.

Paragliding owes its appearance to landings on ordinary parachutes. Moreover, these launches took place both in the wild and boundless West, and in the “iron curtain” of the USSR protected from all sides. This then appeared the “home” development of the first paragliders, very conditionally safe. But at the beginning of his journey the paraglider looked like a paratrooper lagging behind the plane: a steerable parachute-wing opened on a precipice into a strong wind and then, with loud screams, pulling the control lines and dodging trees and rocks along the way, he quickly flew down. And if in the West, the process of improving the parachute dome was stimulated by the capitalist system and market competition (which led to the rapid development of two different polarities of self-expression – base jumping and paragliding), in the USSR for a long time the development of parachutism and ultra-light aviation remained banned, controlled and restricted. And it was limited to amateur singles or serious experiments in the airborne troops. Parachutes were needed for the war, everything else was not so important.

It is rumored that the first launches of parachutes from the ground were invented by paratroopers for a hidden and sudden descent from the slopes of the mountains or as an alternative to quickly relocating to the valley. On the other hand, amateur athletes also tried such launches when it was not possible to jump from an airplane. Chilling tired after a rapid descent of a limb, lonely lovers began to wiggle their brains, inventing how to increase the time spent in the air. Having made the parachute area larger, we faced the problem of laying it in a satchel and spat on it, having decided: if it is impossible to start from an airplane, we will jump only from the ground, with the wing already spread out. The increased wing area allowed to soar in the ascending thermal streams of air and even gain altitude! That in itself is nonsense for a parachute: after all, it is for descending, not lifting. The direction vector has changed, making an attempt to start more accessible for those who want to suffer with it. Yes, it is an attempt to start. The start itself was not always obtained. Even with an increased area, the parachute required a strong wind for planning (10-12 meters per second minimum), and the gusts of such wind twisted the dome, dragged the pilot along the ground and brought a lot of all the fun, which only strengthened the understanding that flights are for the elect and very, very patient. Such domes became the prototypes of modern, safe and easy-to-fly paragliders. I must say that almost all paragliders with experience of 10 years or more began to fly precisely on such domes for ground lunches. Those who survived, in the literal and figurative sense, were able to master paragliders faster than others. The reason is that parachutes for hovering, as, for example, the legendary SPP-30, require great diligence at launch, and their flight speed is higher than all modern types of paragliding wing. That is, the skills and experience of the athlete parachutist were needed, as well as the ability to start from the ground.

Briefly about the wing of the transitional type: it is no longer a parachute – you cannot thrust a satchel into a satchel, but also a paraglider We have such a wing was the domestic SPP-30, that is, “sports planning parachute.” Before the first real paragliders appeared, everyone who was lucky to get him learned to fly on the SPP-30. Features SPP-30: simple equipment, lightweight suspension system, decent speed and easy operation, the ability to soar with the wind of 9-12 m / s. Already in 1992-93 our single lovers jumped from the slopes of Ai-Petri, and this did not always end up driving into the slope at a speed of 100 km / h, and most importantly: the flight was, and it lasted five to ten minutes! And for an ordinary earthly person, this is a whole treasure, and indeed, without any aircraft there, that was the alluring miracle! But all this was not a ground launch, but only its beginning. Separated from skydiving (skydiving), BASE jumping appeared in all its extreme, paragliding developed with the improvement of the wings of the soft type. And yet there were still cranks who flew ordinary parachutes, revealing them on the ground and starting from cliffs. Competition in business and sport leads to tremendous results: both here and in the West began to produce safe devices for a wide range of applications. Some 30 years ago paraglider prototypes appeared – and now a huge number of manufacturers, models and types of this wing are on the market.

But why ground round is still in demand? Many of the paragliders do not understand the groundlongers: they say, those who like to run in the mountains, they have a flight for 10-30 seconds and so on. Here you need to look at the root.
